Using the Free Automated Online Converter

Understanding the online converter capabilities and troubleshooting

The online converter is not able to convert all documents. Many variables like document size, embedded fonts, poor scan quality, etc., can affect the online converter's ability to successfully complete the conversion.

Notes:

  1. If you didn't receive your converted document in your email within 20 minutes, please check your junk mail folder.

  2. It is possible, first of all, that the document simply failed to properly upload.

This could be due to a isolated website glitch, or it could be a corruption in the PDF file, itself.
We recommend attempting your upload again. If it still doesn't work, feel free to send the PDF file to [email protected] so we can analyze it for you.

  3. Documents uploaded to our automated online converter are stored on our server for a short time before being randomly purged.
There is a small group of people (the support team) who can access those files while they still exist on our server in the event that a client requests assistance with their file conversion.
Note that filenames are encrypted, so the only way we can locate a file is if we are provided with the email address of the user who uploaded it.
If you have uploaded a file you wish to be immediately removed from our system, let us know and we can do that for you.
If privacy is a concern, we don't recommend uploading a document to any website. The desktop version of PDF2XL is locally installed and requires no access to our server for use.

  4. If you wish to convert only specific pages, you will need to use the desktop version of PDF2XL. A free trial can be downloaded from our website.

  • Embedded Text: The automated converter is not able to convert a file containing embedded text. You will need to convert it using the desktop version with OCR enabled.

  • Rotated Document: The automated online converter is not capable of recognizing that a file requires rotation.

  • Security Restrictions: There may be security restrictions within your document that prevent the automated converter from being able to extract the data from your document (you can see these restrictions by opening your document in Adobe Acrobat and going to Menu > Document Properties > Security ([tab]).
The desktop version of PDF2XL is able to bypass some restrictions to convert your PDF.

  • Poor Scan Quality: If your scanned PDF quality is quite low with background noise and/or speckled/bleeding text, it can cause issues for the automated OCR engine.
This document could likely be converted with the desktop version, but it would require validation before completing the conversion for an accurate output.

  • Document Complexity: The online converter works best when the document has a basic, standard table format. If the first page of your document is not structured this way, the automated converter will not be able to determine a layout.

  • File Size: The file may be too large. The automated online converter cannot convert files larger than 5MB.

  • Conversion Limit: There is a limit of six conversions in a 24-hour period.

  • Damaged PDF: It appears that your PDF file is damaged:

This could have occurred during the upload process, in which case, we recommend you try again; or, it could be that the file, itself, is corrupted.

Send us the PDF you are trying to convert so we can analyze it for you.

  • Handwritten Text: Handwritten text is difficult for the OCR engine to translate into text since the characters can vary so greatly from basic typographical characters. Handwriting recognition can't be guaranteed for accuracy, unfortunately, since handwritten characters tend to be so variable.

Regrettably, we don't know of any other software that can perform this conversion well.

  • File Contains Images: The automated online converter is not capable of converting files with images. We recommend downloading the free trial desktop version.

  • No Fonts: In some cases, the document does not contain any actual fonts, therefore, the result that comes up with the automated converter is blank.
This is something that occurs when the document is saved without embedding any non-traditional fonts (but this is not the only cause).

This document can usually be converted using the desktop version, where you can engage the OCR engine to locate the characters in the document.

  • Wrong Format Option: Some file structures are better recommended for a PDF to Word conversion since it may contain many pages of general text that is not in table format.
